A New UTØYA / 60 Million for 2015

The Norwegian massacre of the 22nd of July will surely stay in our memories for along time to come, the day will certainly be remembered in the minds of everyone. The utoya disaster has struck hope among the norwegian people and has brought great architecturr minds together, this collaboration has resulted in the Utoya project which is a rebranding of the area and comemorating what took place on that island.

Until now, the reconstruction fund received $ 40 million, but new Utøya has a budget of 60 million. The rest AUF hope to get in with new contributions.

– The background for this work is dark, but we hope to rebuild Utøya, said Eskil Pedersen at the press conference.

– For us, this is a signal that we as a political organization does not allow us to threaten to silence, but also that we do not let ourselves be threatened away from the arenas that are so important to us, continues AUF leader

Therefore, it should also be a memorial on the island .

– Our desire is to honor the victims through the use of the island. It would be sad if the island due and it grew again. Therefore, we believe it is better to come to a place that is maintained, but a place that has matured, he continues.

Efforts to design the memorial is not started because the AUF want dependents and survivors to be included in the decision making process, according to Pedersen.

New main building

AUF said in a statement that these are part of the project:

  • Designated memorial to honor the victims of the terrorist attack 22 July 2011.
  • New main building (“square”) with conference area, meeting rooms, dining room, kitchen facilities, balconies, bazaar area and clock tower.
  • New piers, repair of access road on land and upgrading of existing infrastructure (including universal design and upgrading of Love Lane).
  • Upgrade of activity areas (new bathing in the “Bay of Pigs”, upgrading of soccer and volleyball, drainage for camping, chargers, lighting and more).
  • Multiple indoor overnight accommodation, either in restored barn or as the extension of the new main building (“square”)
  • Renovation of existing buildings (main / “information”, sanitary facilities and storehouses).
  • New outdoor stage for concerts and cultural events.

This autumn has been planning to start rehabilitation of the existing buildings. Café building will also be demolished. In the summer of 2013 is planned that construction of the new main building will start.

AUF Utøya plan is for it to become Norway’s leading conference and camp for youth.

Architect Håkon Matre Aasarød the firm Fantastic Norway say they have been inspired by a Norwegian cluster.

AUF leader Eskil Pedersen also mentioned at Friday’s press conference this controversy.

– In our central national board and we have had unilateral support to rebuild Utøya. But I have full respect for both views. And it’s important for me to emphasize that those who do not want to be on Utøya, is as good a AUF’s and a full member.
